NELO CHOULOUTE
HAITI
Nelo Chouloute,Haitian born musician never knew how powerful his political lyrics would grip the Haitian music scene when he started writing his own songs at the age of 16. The former student of College CES (CollegeEvangelique De Simon) owed his humble music start to his school and his friend who taught him how to play the guitar.
Nelo has come very far. The founder of Groupe Louange(worship),which placed 4th at a competition, organized by the Ministry of Culture in Port-Au- Prince, Haiti has since developed his musical talent and stagecraft that can awe an audience. You need to attend his musical performance to understand his ubiquitous stage performance always engaging the audience with loud interactive responses of his choruses that make them often ask for encore.
Nelo's eclectic stage act was first noticed by the editor of Mosaic Edition multicultural news during a performance at the Black History Month (FESTIVEBENE) organized by SOFIFRAN inWelland, Niagara Region.
Nelo Chouloute brought the crowd to their feet with his powerful rendition of songs in Creole at a time when Haiti was going through the aftermath of the devastating earthquake, which killed over 200,000 people January 12, 2010.
Nelo grew up South of Haiti (Les Cayes) outskirts of the City of Simon. Though he now lives in Canada, his deep love for his country has propelled his musical career in addressing the social political development of his nation through lyrics. He spices his lyric with key words from his father's sermons like love, peace, suffering, joy, security, prosperity and hope to name a few. His song at his first concert in the City of Welland 2010 was so powerful it drew cheers and visible emotions from Haitians and non-Haitians. Nelo's lyrics reflect the reality of Haitian people. It covers the pain in a mother's eyes when she cannot feed her children, a father's helplessness not being able to protect his family, young boy's vulnerability on the street panhandling and the ?Restavek' young girls who cannot go to school because they are indentures in modern day slavery in Haiti.
Nelo Chouloute sings in French, Creole and English. Nelo has the velvet and powerful voice to accompany his lyrics. He draws his influence from Wyclef Jean, Manno Charlemagne, Les Freres Parents,Luck Mervil, all Haitians and legendary Bob Marley whose music he fell in love with during his stay in Jamaica in 2000.
His anti-corruption demo music ?Gade Milyon' - Embezzlement was performed live at the Nuit D'Afrique (Ballattou Club - Montreal). The song resonated well with the political situation in Haiti and drew a lot of ovation from the audience. He performs at various cultural events. He has performed at charitable fundraising activities in Toronto, Ontario for the people of Haiti and during the natural disaster in Japan.
Nelo Chouloute believes his birth country Haiti can do better. Though far away in Canada he thinks of his fellow Haitians back home with all their struggles and difficulties. His slogan "Haiti, small country but great nation" constantly reminds him of the great potentials of his homeland.
